Roland Tyson began making outdoor clothing in 1983 at the age of 17 on an old industrial sewing machine in his childhood bedroom. As a young outdoor enthusiast, Roland realized he had a passion and talent for creating cutting-edge outdoor gear. He was soon designing and manufacturing gear for other Australian adventurers. In 1991, after outfitting an unusual first ascent of Mount Everest (a trek of over 1,126 kilometres and 8,848 metres from sea level to a solo summit), Sea to Summit was born.
Roland's quest to design the best, lightest, and most durable equipment would take him further into the remote lands of Australia and eventually the Himalayas. In these wild places, you could put your inventions to the test.
In 1993, Roland joined Penny Sanderson, who had spent 6 years at Australian Geographic. Her passion for exploration and innovation was a perfect fit for Sea to Summit. She and Roland began traveling several months a year, spending their time climbing, sailing, hiking and cycling. Wherever they went, they tested products and iterated on designs.
Sea to Summit has quickly become a successful global brand, built on Penny and Roland’s love of travel and design. Together, they own and operate Sea to Summit and continue to be involved in every step of the journey, from developing raw materials to putting perfected gear in the hands of customers around the world.
